Key Ingredients for Photographic Success

Model. Ice Box. Bricks Wall.

That’s everything you need for a rad shot just before the sun goes all the way down. I set up an informal photo practice session in Charlotte with some friends who wanted to try out new gear. I figured I could help them make better use of their photographic equipment, and maybe shoot a few pics in the process. Well, here’s one that works so well because it’s just a simple photo of a pensive and elegant model.

Senior Portraits on a Rainy Day in Charlotte

This spring in Charlotte turned out to be monsoon season or something, and this shoot was booked, canceled, and re-booked a couple of times. Even on the day of the shoot, we had to work around evening thunder and rain to make these photos. The rain let up eventually and we were able to get out in the open at the parking deck we were shooting in. I like this spot for senior pictures for dudes. It’s got a good industrial/mechanical/steel feel which makes guys look a little more at home. Check these out, and let me know what you think.

Backlight is Your Friend

I like backlit shots. Backlit shots on stairs are cool, too. This is one. As I get minutes here and there, I’m still processing images from a shoot I did with some friends in Mooresville. So the images are showing up randomly in posts like this. Enjoy!

I got together with a couple other photographer friends and models for a fashion style shoot in downtown Mooresville. We just wanted to test out some equipment, and see what we could find in terms of interesting settings around town. Turns out, Mooresville offers a lot of good locations for photos. I’m always looking for good locations and scenes to do portrait sessions in Charlotte. There’s one area that I’ve driven past so much that I practically never even give it a second thought. Something clicked the other day, and I realized it would be perfect for a late afternoon photo shoot. So I took my test models (wife & daughter) out for a quick shoot to see what I could produce. I got several photos that I think are great, and shared a couple below…

I’ll definitely add this to my list of spots for future portrait sessions, and the lesson here is that exotic (or studio) locations are easy to dream about. Sometimes, though, you’ll find a really great backdrop right under your nose.

Mom and Baby in Natural Light

Last week I was asked to photograph this beautiful 2 week old baby at the family’s home in Charlotte. This photo of her mom holding her is one of my favorite images I’ve made. Maybe it’s because her expression reminds me of my own daughter; maybe it’s the natural light; maybe it’s just a sweet portrait of a baby with her mom.

New-baby Portraits

I rarely encourage models to sleep through photo shoots, but it’s perfectly acceptable for a newborn photo session.

This weekend, I was honored to capture some photographs of Jake & Nicole’s now 3 week old baby boy. We’ve come full-circle. A few weeks ago we were strolling through Fort Mill, SC shooting their maternity portraits. They’re proud parents with a handsome boy, and even though he won’t remember any of it he did great!

I shot these photos with my D300, 60mm/f2.8 and 2 SB-28dx flashes at the family’s home. One flash was on the camera. The other I positioned in random spots around the room, triggering it with my Pocket Wizard remotes. I’ve come to love the Nikkor 60mm Micro lens for portraits. The lens’ sharpness is perfect, and the macro focusing capability allows for tight, intimate people pictures. See a few more at Facebook.

Baby’s First Swing

Baby Trace (and his mom and dad) let me shoot his first time in a swing. He loved it. I love this shot. It’s got the essentials, but I love it for what it doesn’t have almost as much. It doesn’t have any motion blur… doesn’t have any cheesy lens effects… doesn’t have a parent pushing him (not that his parents aren’t cool). We’ve all seen those photos. This is just a kid super-stoked in a swing. We’ve all felt it. We all like feelin’ it. And, Trace, we’re with ya in this one buddy!
